an average of 7,100 home structure fires per year in which a microwave oven was involved in ignition. These fires caused an average of fewer than 10 civilian deaths, 150 civilian injuries, and $31 million in direct property damage per year”. WikiHow has compiled a list of ways to avoid your microwave causing fire damage to

- Check to make sure paper products are microwave-safe.
- Check if food/drink containers are microwave-safe.
- Don’t microwave chili peppers or grapes.

- Don’t turn the microwave on when it’s empty.
Safety
- Become familiar with the manufacturer’s guide.
- Make sure the area around your microwave is clear.
- Do not leave the microwave unattended.
- Read the directions prior to microwaving food.
- Do not allow children near the microwave.
- If the power cords appear damaged, do not use the microwave.
- If your microwave is broken, don’t try to fix it yourself.
- If your microwave does happen to catch a small fire, unplug it immediately and do not open the door.
